A Summer State Of Mind - Tap Into Your Happiness

“A summer state of mind”– isn’t that the most beautiful phrase you’ve heard lately?

We at Hella Shade believe that keeping a summer state of mind, even on the coldest and gloomiest of days, guarantees to not just uplift your spirit, but your entire day, and wrap its arms around you like a snug blanket.

Thinking of summer evokes sights, fragrances, sounds and wonderful memories. The sights and fragrances of fresh flowers, freshly baked croissants, refreshing summer rain, as well as the sound of birds singing and children playing. These all elicit feelings and memories of joy and happiness.

As we move out of winter and into warm spring and hot summer, we realise the need to get ourselves ready for our beautiful South African outdoors. This means focusing on self-care and our emotional well-being, in addition to our physical well-being. Although, looking after our bodies leads us to feel better about ourselves.

Self-care means taking the time out of your daily routine to do things that help you live your best life and improve both your physical health and mental health. When it comes to your mental health, self-care can help you manage stress, lower your risk of illness, and increase your energy.

We believe self-care and self-love are synonymous and work in synergy with each other. Although we love to focus on eye care with our premium range of sunglasses, we know that self-care is essential to feel good about yourself.

There are many forms that self-care may take, whilst all consciously working to promote your physical, mental and emotional health. It could be; ensuring you get enough sleep, or walking outside for a few minutes for some fresh air and sunshine. And remember to wear your sunglasses. They are necessary accessories in every season, not just summer!

When you’ve taken steps to care for your mind and body, you’ll be able to live your best life and tap into happiness every day.

Happiness is an emotional state of mind characterised by feelings of joy, satisfaction, contentment, and fulfilment. The dictionary definition is “feelings of joy and pleasure mingled together”.

A feeling of happiness is more than just an experience of joy or pleasure. It is a state of mind where one feels that “life is good”. That is our wish for everyone, every day. To be in a state of happiness can only lead to feelings of gratitude for the small things in life; from your early morning cup of coffee, a snuggle from your child or pet, a sunset or even purchasing something just for you!

Here are a few tips we’ve put together to help you tap into your happiness daily:

  1. Choose happiness - “Happiness is a choice, not a result. Nothing will make you happy… until you choose to be happy. No person will make you happy… unless you decide to be happy. Your happiness will not come to you, it can only come from you.” Ralph Marsten.

  2. Positive emotions - such as gratitude, joy, contentment, inspiration, amusement, hope, and pride. Regularly experiencing these emotions will create an ‘upward spiral’ in our minds. Even though life has its difficulties, positive emotions will help you focus on the beneficial aspects of any situation.

  3. Generosity - giving to and doing things for others is not only good for them and a noble thing to do, it also makes us happier and healthier too.

  4. Awareness - live life mindfully. Stop and take notice. Learning to be more mindful and aware will do wonders for your well-being in all areas of life. A walk in your neighbourhood, the way we eat, or our relationships. Pay attention to the little things.

  5. Resilience - We all have times of stress, loss, failure or trauma in our lives.  How we respond to these times will impact our well-being. Whilst we can’t always choose what happens to us, we can choose how to react to these situations.

  6. Exercise - Our bodies and our minds are connected. Being active makes us feel happier, as well as being beneficial for our physical health.

  7. Learning - Learning affects our well-being in many positive ways. It exposes us to new ideas and helps us stay curious, and encourages us to find out more. It also gives us a sense of accomplishment and helps boost our self-confidence and sense of self-worth.

  8. Goals - Goals motivate us. They need to be challenging enough to excite you, but also achievable enough not to cause undue stress. The feelings of accomplishment and achievement when we attain them, is a motivating and authenticating factor.

  9. Meaning - If you have meaning and purpose in your life, you feel happier, feel in control, and get more out of what you do. Finding meaning and purpose may come in the form of; your faith, serving at a charity, being a parent, something that makes you feel connected to something bigger than yourself.

  10.  Acceptance - Be comfortable with who you are. Try not to focus on your flaws, or compare yourself to others. Learn to accept yourself as you are, be kinder to yourself when things go wrong. This will help to increase your enjoyment of life and build resilience and your well-being.
